Sweet Wednesday — the 1st and 3rd Wednesday afternoon party

Sweet Wednesday runs on the first and third Wednesday of each month, from 1pm to 8.30pm, in the basement club beneath Central Station on Wharfdale Road in King's Cross — a party for transgender women, cross-dressers, and their friends and admirers.

It is an afternoon rather than a late night, and it is set up for first-timers as much as regulars: a changing room with its own loo, a makeup artist working from it through the early afternoon, and a secure cloakroom for coats, bags and valuables. Clothes and wigs are not supplied. Guests can come and go as often as they like during the day.

Photography and filming are not allowed down in the club. They are permitted in the ground-floor bar and on the roof terrace, where guests are asked not to include other people without consent — and because those areas are shared with the public, everyone is asked to dress appropriately for a public place while using them. No drugs, poppers excepted.

Admission is paid on the door in cash, at one of two rates depending on dress. The organiser publishes the current figures and the full programme of dates on its own site.
