A fee paid to the bar, not to the dancer, so she can leave before her shift ends. It compensates the venue for the lost stage time, and it is entirely separate from whatever is agreed with the dancer herself.

Conflating the two is the single most common mistake visitors make. The fine settles the venue's claim on the rest of her shift; anything beyond that is a separate matter, agreed separately and directly. The same system operates in beer bars as well as go-go bars.

Rates differ by venue and by city, and asking the price before committing is standard — nobody is offended by the question. Together with the lady drink it is one of the two charges that define the format; both are explained in our guide to go-go bars in Thailand.

Frequently asked questions

Who receives the bar fine?

The bar. It compensates the venue for the remainder of the shift, not the dancer for her time.

Does paying it settle anything else?

No. Whatever is agreed with the dancer herself is a separate transaction, agreed separately. Treating the fine as covering more than it does is the most common misunderstanding.

How much is it?

It differs by venue and city. Ask at the bar before you commit — it is a normal, posted question.
