The spa is not a pretext: the facilities are real and used as such. What distinguishes the format is that day entry buys access to the premises, with anything further arranged separately inside.
The naming is the clearest external evidence the format exists as a category — Rio establishments carry it in their trading names, in Ipanema and Copacabana. It is also where the format's ambiguity shows: a Rio public-prosecutor operation against a dozen venues described the same establishments as casas de prostituição. What a terma calls itself and how it has been characterised in court papers are not the same thing, and a visitor is best served knowing both.
