Darklands is Europe's largest indoor fetish festival and the biggest event of its kind on the continent, held each winter in Antwerp at the Waagnatie event halls on the Scheldt quayside. Over several days it turns a single industrial dockside complex into a self-contained fetish city — main-floor dance events, dedicated play areas, gear and rubber markets, workshops, and social spaces — drawing a predominantly gay male fetish crowd from across Europe, North America, and beyond to a city small enough that the festival effectively takes it over.

The event's history explains its character. It began as Leather Pride Belgium, a leather-community weekend, and was renamed Fetish Pride as its scope widened beyond leather alone. The Darklands name followed, along with a deliberate opening to every form of fetish — rubber, latex, sportswear, skinhead, puppy play, uniform, and more — each with its own following, its own dress code, and in many cases its own dedicated party within the festival. That breadth is why Darklands functions as a European counterpart to Chicago's International Mr. Leather and Berlin's Folsom Europe: where those events centre on a contest and a street fair respectively, Darklands centres on a building, and on the freedom that comes from having every event under one roof.

Scale is the other defining feature. The festival is run by a large volunteer organisation — dozens of coordinators and several hundred volunteers alongside paid operators and freelancers — which is what allows it to run continuous programming, staffed play spaces, cloakrooms sized for full gear changes, and a market floor across the same site. The festival is strictly for adults, and each party carries its own fetish dress code that is genuinely enforced at the door; part of the reputation Darklands has built rests on how seriously it takes both the dress code and consent within the play areas.

From its sixteenth edition the festival has run under the name Beyond Darklands, a rebrand prompted by redevelopment at Waagnatie: the outdoor space that once carried the festival's tents is unavailable until 2030, so the event was rebuilt as a vertical, layered indoor experience within the halls, and its stated scope widened to gay, bi, pan and queer men.
