The word means roughly "walking house", and that is the format: a corridor of doors, each one a worker's own space. What distinguishes it from a brothel in the ordinary sense is the commercial relationship — the operator is a landlord renting rooms, not an employer engaging staff, and terms are agreed with the woman at her door rather than at a reception desk.
It is a German and Austrian format above all. In Germany the operator needs a licence under the 2017 Prostitutes Protection Act and carries duties that come with it; the rental model does not exempt anyone from that.
