A whiskería is a bar where clients and sex workers meet. There are normally no rooms: people talk over drinks and then leave together for a short-stay hotel or a privado. It is deliberately built to read as an ordinary bar, with music and conversation rather than a stage — which is the opposite of a strip club and a long way from a brothel.
The related term is privado: a small, discreet establishment, often in an apartment, where a few women receive clients on the premises. Rooms, no bar, no social element. Between them these two formats cover most of what is not independent online work.
The format is named in law — in order to ban it
This is where most write-ups of the Argentine scene go wrong by calling it a grey zone. Selling sex as an adult is not a criminal offence in Argentina. The venue is a different matter, and the law on it is nearly ninety years old.
Ley 12.331, the venereal disease prophylaxis act passed in December 1936, penalises anyone who maintains, administers or runs a casa de tolerancia — openly or covertly. Provincial legislation goes further and lists the formats by name: the installation, operation, management, maintenance, promotion, advertising, administration or exploitation, in any form and whether open or concealed, of whiskerías, cabarets, nightclubs, boîtes, casas de tolerancia, saunas and establishments offering sexual services. Ley 26.364 of 2008 covers trafficking, prevention and victim assistance.
So the whiskería is not a format the law has failed to notice. It is a format the law names specifically in order to prohibit it — including its advertising. That these venues operate anyway is a fact about enforcement, not about legality, and it is worth being clear which of those two you are relying on. Our legal status hub has the country detail.

Whiskería, privado, strip club
- Whiskería — a bar. Drinks and conversation, no rooms, and the encounter happens elsewhere.
- Privado — rooms and no bar. Smaller, more discreet, and harder to find without local knowledge.
- Strip club — a performance venue, and a separate thing entirely. There is no stage in a whiskería.
- Independent escorts advertising online operate alongside all three and are the largest part of the market.
- Terms are settled before anything else in every one of these formats. Pesos are standard and dollars are widely taken.
Frequently asked questions
Is a whiskería a strip club?
No. A whiskería has no performance element — it is a bar where people meet and then go elsewhere. Argentine strip clubs exist separately and are what they sound like.
What is the difference between a whiskería and a privado?
Rooms. A whiskería is social and the encounter takes place off-site; a privado has rooms on the premises and little or no bar. Privados are smaller and considerably more discreet.
Is any of this legal?
Selling sex as an adult is not a criminal offence. Running the venue is: Ley 12.331 of 1936 penalises maintaining or administering a casa de tolerancia, and provincial law prohibits whiskerías, cabarets, nightclubs, boîtes and saunas by name, along with promoting or advertising them. The venues operate regardless, but that is enforcement rather than permission.
Do clients face legal risk?
Buying from a consenting adult is not itself criminalised and Argentina does not use the Nordic model. That is a narrower statement than "no risk": the trafficking legislation and the prohibitions on operating and promoting these venues are what the law is aimed at, and exploitation offences do not depend on the buyer's good intentions.
Do you list whiskerías?
