Germany has the best FKK scene in Europe, and the twelve clubs below are the ones worth planning a trip around — ranked, in the order we rate them. The scene clusters hard around Frankfurt; Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Leipzig and Erfurt each have one landmark house.

What puts a club at the top

We rank on three things: how much club there actually is, how easily you can get to it, and whether it holds up on an ordinary Tuesday rather than only on a party night.

Artemis takes first place because it is the one club here you can reach without planning your day around it. It sits on the S-Bahn at Halensee in Berlin, opens at 11am and runs to 5am, every day of the week. Nothing else in Germany combines that scale with that access.

Sharks and Oase are next because they are the two the Frankfurt regulars keep going back to, and neither has coasted. FKK World is the biggest of the lot by a wide margin — 50,000 square metres of grounds with 2,500 square metres of air-conditioned space inside — and the drive out to Pohlheim is simply what that size costs.

Below those four the list turns on what each club is for. The Palace and Mainhattan are the two you can do from central Frankfurt in a taxi. Babylon is the largest in Hamburg at 2,800 square metres and the only one on this list that advertises step-free access throughout. Samya, Sakura, Paradies Erfurt, Leipzig and Finca Erotica are the best in their regions rather than national destinations, and they are ranked accordingly.

Five of the twelve are within an hour of Frankfurt

If you only have one trip in you, make it this one. Sharks in Darmstadt, Oase in Friedrichsdorf, World in Pohlheim, and The Palace and Mainhattan inside Frankfurt itself put five of the twelve within about an hour of the same airport. Nowhere else in Europe is the density anything like it.

The trade-off is that four of the five assume a car. Mainhattan is the exception in the city, roughly five minutes from the centre on Schielestraße.

What a visit is actually like

An FKK club is a day spa with a bar attached and sex available in it, which reads stranger than it plays. You pay one entry fee, change into a robe, and the sauna, pool and buffet are included. Nothing else is.

  • Entry and the session are separate. The entry fee goes to the club; the session is agreed and paid directly with the woman, and the club stays out of that arrangement entirely.
  • Most clubs are out of town, and most assume a car. Artemis in Berlin is the real exception, and Mainhattan is walkable-ish from central Frankfurt.
  • Bring cash, in small notes. On-site ATMs exist and charge properly for the convenience.
  • Phones stay in the locker. Photography is banned everywhere and the ban is enforced.
  • A lady drink is a drink. It is not a session and it is not a step towards one.
  • Hours run long — several of these clubs go to 4am or 5am — but published hours change. Check the club's own site the day you go.

What does FKK stand for?

Freikoerperkultur, or free body culture, the German naturist tradition of social nudity. In the adult context an FKK club is a sauna club: a spa with pools, saunas, a bar and a buffet, where guests are nude or in a robe and sex is available on the premises.

It varies by club, by day and by event, and clubs change it without notice. Any figure a club publishes is an indication until you confirm it at the door, so check the club's own site before you travel. Entry buys the facilities and the buffet; sessions are agreed and paid separately with the woman.

How long should a visit be?
