A host club is the hostess bar inverted: young men, styled to a very particular aesthetic, selling conversation, attention and champagne to female customers. Hosts compete to be nominated by regulars, and the successful ones become well known within the industry with followings and earnings that ordinary employment would not match.
It is also the format that prompted Japan to change the law, and any honest guide has to lead with that rather than treat it as a footnote.
The urikake problem, and the 2025 law
The mechanism was credit. A customer could run a tab rather than pay on the night, and a debt to a host she had feelings for is a very different thing from a bar bill. Japanese authorities documented what followed: customers pressured into sex work, or referred into it, in order to clear what they owed.
That is now explicitly unlawful. Making someone engage in prostitution, or introducing them to harmful sex-industry work, in order to repay host club charges is prohibited under the Anti-Prostitution Act and the Employment Security Act. The National Police Agency runs a dedicated programme on predatory host clubs, whose review panel reported in December 2024; a Fลซeihล amendment regulating exploitative practices was enacted in May 2025 and fully in force by 28 November 2025.
The regulator's stated reasoning is worth repeating because it is candid: hospitality creates an atmosphere that lowers a customer's judgement, and staff can exploit the relationship formed by a customer's romantic feelings, producing serious payment disputes. Japan has support lines for people caught in this โ the women's counselling support centre on #8778 and the consumer hotline on 188.
How a visit works
- A set charge buys a block of time; hosts rotate through the table early on so you can pick who to nominate.
- Nomination (shimei) fixes you to one host and is where the relationship โ and the spending โ begins.
- Drinks are the business. What the host drinks is charged to you, and champagne is the top of the range by a wide margin.
- A first visit is often discounted heavily. That price is an introduction, not the standing rate.
- Pay on the night and decline a tab. This is the single most important sentence in this guide.
- Set a number before you go in and treat it as fixed, the way you would at a casino.
What we list
No host clubs โ we hold none, and the sector sits almost entirely outside directories of this kind. Our 22 Japanese listings are in Tokyo and Sapporo and are categorised as brothels, gentlemen's clubs and strip clubs. Kabukicho in Shinjuku is where the host club industry is concentrated, and we cover the district itself separately.
For the original of which this is the mirror image, see hostess bars in Japan. Adult-venue rules differ by country โ our legal status hub has the detail.
Frequently asked questions
Do host clubs offer sexual services?
Mainstream host clubs do not. The product is company, attention and drinking. What has caused harm is not the service but the billing โ specifically running a tab.
Is it safe to visit?
The physical risk in an established venue is low. The financial risk is the real one and it is not hypothetical: credit tabs at host clubs led to customers being pushed into sex work to repay them, which is why Japan legislated in 2025. Pay on the night, refuse a tab, and fix your budget before you go.
What is urikake?
The practice of letting a customer run a tab rather than settle up on the night. It is the mechanism behind the harm the 2025 Fลซeihล amendment was written to address, because a debt owed to someone you have feelings for is not an ordinary debt.
What changed in the law in 2025?
An amendment to the Fลซeihล added compliance obligations for entertainment food and drink businesses โ the category host clubs fall under โ aimed at exploitative practices. It was enacted in May 2025 and all provisions were in force by 28 November 2025. Separately, coercing or referring someone into sex work to repay club charges is prohibited under the Anti-Prostitution Act and the Employment Security Act.
Where do I get help if this has happened to someone?
In Japan, the women's counselling support centre can be reached on #8778 and the consumer hotline on 188. Debt built up this way is a matter for those services rather than something to settle with the club.
