Prepago — literally "prepaid" — is the standard Colombian term for escort work. It was borrowed from the mobile phone market, where a prepaid SIM was a prepago, and it stuck because payment is agreed before rather than after. It is a Colombian usage and will not be understood the same way elsewhere in Latin America.
In practice it covers a wide range, but it most often means an independent escort arranging work directly rather than through a venue or an agency.
Colombia's courts went further than most
Colombia is one of the more interesting jurisdictions in this area, and not for the reasons it is usually discussed. In Sentencia T-629 of 2010, the Constitutional Court treated prostitution as an activity that is neither punishable nor an infraction, subject to regulation across the three territorial levels of government — and it went on to hold that an employment relationship can protect the economic activity of a sex worker in a commercial establishment set up for that purpose.
That is a court recognising that a contract of employment can exist in this work, with the labour protections that follow. The same ruling described people in prostitution as historically discriminated against and therefore in a position of manifest vulnerability deserving special protection — a characterisation the Court reaffirmed in T-594 of 2016.
Third-party exploitation remains an offence, and municipalities regulate where venues may operate through zonas de tolerancia — designated areas whose purpose is to stop establishments spreading indiscriminately into residential neighbourhoods. Our legal status hub covers the country position.

Practical points
- Terms are agreed in advance — that is what the word means. Anything renegotiated later is a warning sign rather than a normal step.
- Established venues and independently verifiable arrangements are a different proposition from street-level ones, in safety and in predictability.
- Do not carry more cash or valuables than an evening needs, and be careful about accepting drinks from people you have just met. Drink-spiking robbery is a documented problem in Colombian nightlife districts and is not specific to this sector.
- Medellín's El Poblado and Bogotá's Zona Rosa are the areas most set up for visitors, which is not the same as saying anywhere is risk-free.
- Rates vary across the whole spread of the market. They are set individually and agreed up front.
