about

Sanctuary Studios is a professional BDSM dungeon and kink studio in the Athens district of Los Angeles, about twenty minutes from LAX. Its own strapline calls it Los Angeles' premier professional BDSM dungeon and kink studio, and it has been female owned and operated since 1999.

The building runs to more than five thousand square feet, with a two-thousand square foot main showroom and a stage with sound and lighting. Its rental page describes nine private playrooms - among them a feminization room, a domestic room and a group shower room - alongside fully equipped dungeon rooms, a dressing room with a make-up station, a kitchenette, showers, laundry and a private fenced smoking patio. Rooms are air-conditioned and stocked with cleaning supplies, towels and an extensive collection of fetish gear and equipment.

Two different things happen here. An on-site team of professional Dominants, Switches and submissives takes bookings for kink and fetish sessions; they are independent contractors who set their own rates and availability, and you can either come in during opening hours to meet whoever is on site or contact them through the studio. Separately the rooms are let by the hour - to visiting professionals, to couples who cannot do this at home, and for photo and video production. The studio says it has been used as a location by production companies including HBO, Showtime, Netflix and Kink.com. It is open seven days a week and welcomes walk-ins, though it asks you to phone ahead if you want a particular room.

The house rules are published and firm. Before a session, the professional you have booked discusses your interests and your limits, including any physical ones, and a safeword is established; the studio states that safewords must be honoured at all times and that a consent violation or a refusal to honour one can end the session on the spot and bar you from returning. Exchange of body fluids is not allowed, nor is extreme breath play - choking, asphyxiation or carotid play - and the studio states there is no sex on the premises. Extended and overnight sessions are available. Rates are set by each professional and by the studio and are not quoted here.

My first time at the new quarters. I was given a tour. The rooms are beautiful and everything was very clean. I recommend this business.

Sanctuary Studios can be a great place with great events and great people. BUT, in the end, they appeal to a set of rules that are unforgiving and unfair to men. Women from another venue, Velvet Obscura took issue with me for philosophical differences and their discomfort with being asked for a scene too quickly in their view. They also took issue with me asking most of the women present for this scene. It was a simple nonsexual larp they didn't understand and was in no way dangerous. I took no issue with being rejected. I was and am happy for the clear communication and that they kept themselves safe Still I was weird to in their eyes and they failed to see the irony of this community shaming people for being freaks. They then obsessed over hurting me and reported me for "consent violations" when I never had any contact or scene with them. I happily accepted their rejections and never sought to return. But that wasn't enough. They reported me to every venue in the region with these lies and Sanctuary Studios for months now has asked me to not go to their events because they are "investigating." No one told me what I was specifically accused of. No one asked me for my side of the story. I tried to give it but was met with silence. I would give Sanctuary Studios 5 stars if it weren't for the fact that they decided to treat me like Frankenstein's monster, pretending that it's for safety. If they made any compromise to give me a path of redemption to prove that I'm not a problem. I'm trying to connect and meet people. I'm hoping to make friends amd eventually find a partner. The VO decided that just because I wasn't to their taste, I should have nobody. I got hints that they were vague about what these violations were. I can show where VO publically shamed me after that event but never complained in that shaming about consent violations. I thought this community would be supportive, nonjudgemental, and loving. Instead, I was ostricized, banned, and blacklisted for being too weird for them. It's cold and unforgiving. I've heard from others that I am not the first guy this has happened to. Re: Sanctuary and a point to all advocates for safety in this community. Real justice is the best safety anyone can have. Taking all sides, offering a path for due process, and doing this with restorative or transformative justice methodology optimizes safety. Letting drama weaponize your safety concerns is not keeping the community safe. If I were a dangerous person, and I'm not, you now have no idea what I'm doing. I can't even learn safety from a community that bans me. If someone is ready, willing, and able to resolve conflict and learn and prove themselves, you are opening up the community to a major vulnerability by denying them that path. You don't even need to tell me what I did wrong to be productive. Just talk to me about the mistakes I'm willing to confess. Actually know me. No, you don't HAVE to. It would just be more safe for everyone involved if you did operate that way. You let them socially destroy me and didn't even look at the holes I could show you in their claims. That's not safe.

Sanctuary Studios is absolutely iconic. I feel like I am living and breathing the real LA bdsm nightlife when I attend an event.

THIS IS AN "ADULT-ONLY" ESTABLISHMENT! GOVERNMENT OR STATE ID REQUIRED! Extremely well equipped with several rooms to choose from. Very knowledgeable and experienced staff who firmly follow Risk Aware Consentual Kink (RACK) and Safe, Sane, Consensual (SSC). They host educational classes and demos.
